24 June 2008, Trial casualties named After the hurly-burly of planting out large numbers of Canna plants from both our collections and the hundreds of seedlings being grown-on from last year, we have now carried out a census of the plants safely growing in the trial. Inevitabley, there have been casualties, and several simply never grew when planted, and these included Cannas 'Kyneburg', and 'Leprechaun', where none of the rhizomes have survived at all. The remainder of the trial entrants are happily growing in 15 litre pots, watered and fed to the best standards available. Some are growing in the trial polytunnel, others outdoors, depending on their condition and needs. Each is being given individual attention, and is being grown to the best of it's potential. They are all getting regular inspections for aphids, and red-spider mites, the plauge of Cannas indoors at this time of the year. When needed, they are being given systemic aphid protection and the latest chemical treatment for spider mite. Photographs of some of the entrants that have flowered will be posted in the next few days in the trial journal.
